Baaaaaby eagles
I caught this family of bald eagles on the beach in front of my house the other day. Just remember, these are the noble symbols of the United States of America in about five years. ( Bad hair day ) |

Bertie Kills the Mood [Fanart]
I know I just posted and you guys are probably thinking "at least let us catch our collective breaths for a moment," but I couldn't help myself. I had a productive day and while still on that jittery, lovely creation-high, I decided I would draw some J&W smut. Of course, the results were far less sexy than I was aiming for, but I thought I'd share anyway. So yes, let the silliness continue. XD Title: Bertie Kills the Mood

Sad News...
On Sunday morning I will no longer be a rattie Mommy. :( I lost Cally, the last of my 6 original ratties, at just a few months over 3 years old last week. She had a really large tumor and I was bringing her in on Monday to get put down and she died Sunday morning. I'm relieved I didn't really have to make that decision for her and she made it for herself. She was old, had lost a lot of her quality of life, and it was time for her to go. That left behind JayBird. I love JayBird, but when I got her I didn't realize I was allergic to hairless rats. Normal rats I'm fine with but apparently not hairless. It was fine when she had her 5 rattie siblings to play with, and even just Cally, but now that she's alone it's not fair for her. My husband handles her, but he's gone for months at a time for work. So I spread the word around where I work that I have a hairless for adoption and she was nabbed up by the lead animal caretaker right away. She may actually stay where I work as an education animal for the summer! That means she'll be used to educate kids about rats and how to care for them as part of a summer camp program. She LOVES kids so I think this will be a good match for her. And if she ends up hating the program she'll go to a nice home with the head handler. So, really, this is a great thing for everyone involved. I still get to see her when I work, she gets TONS of attention (both physical and medical), and my co-worker gets the hairless rattie she's wanted for year. I'll be sad to have that out of my life, but it's for the best. |

hey everyone :) new rat owner
hey everyone, i'm new here. this past wednesday, a friend of mine who works at a vet's office called me and was like "this morning when we were opening up the office, we found a cage someone had dumped outside our door, with a little rat in it." and was telling me about it. they were basically filled to capacity and didn't have really any supplies/etc to house a rat within the clinic until they could find somewhere for it to go. so since i'm leaving in a month to go to school and was planning to get a pet to bring with me anyway [i had been considering a hamster but.. ew], so i offered to take this little rat. not knowing anything about them. the vet working on wednesday checked her over and told me she was a healthy little girl, and was just scared, and so she was therefore given a clean bill of health and i took her home. the cage she had been dumped in was really small, a small hamster cage. plastic bottom. wire walls, little house, wheel, water bottle, etc. so i went to petsmart and bought a pretty big cage for her, the guy working there was telling me about measurements etc etc for rat cages. i also did a little research. she's a dark brown dumbo rat.. she has these silly giant ears on the sides of her head. she is a lone rat, yes. i would consider buying another girl for her to live with, can anyone suggest as to how i would best do this? introducing them so they don't fight? [do rats even fight eachother?]. i'm not sure at all how old she is. her body is exactly the same size as the 5-6 month old hamsters i had considered buying. so about 3 or 3 and a half inches in length, plus tail. can anyone help me guesstimate possibly how old she is? definitely still a baby, but i'm not sure. and how big will a female dumbo generally get? the guy at petsmart also recommended me a bag of mixed food that he said he feeds his rats at home. he also said "basically any fruits, veggies, whole wheat breads" were edible. she's really friendly, and in the past 2 days that i've had her she's let me hold her, sat on my lap and eaten 1 little blueberry [cutest thing i've ever seen] and is a little less nervous/shaky. so these are my questions: -cage mate? how does one go about finding one? is it ABSOLUTELY necessary? what if i were to keep her as a single rat? thanks so much.. and sorry for such the long post. all i know about rats is what i've read online in the past few days.. before wednesday i'd never even held a rat before. PS her name is bettina :) |

Pet Store Rescue...
So, today I decided to go out to lunch. I was driving through a nearby town I never really go to, and saw a small mom n pop pet store. I needed more carefresh and I was right there, so I decided to stop. As soon as I walked in I saw a 'wall' of 5 gallon aquariums full of rats. They were divided my size... labeled from 'x-small' thru 'xx-large' and it terrible condition. Most cages had 15 + rats in them. Ugh. I went over to talk to them, knowing I couldnt buy any. As I was 'talking' to them, a lady (the owner) came over and asked me if I knew anything about rats. I told her I did, and she led me back into a little back room. Ok, the room was terrible. Stacks and stacks of aquariums holding 3-5 generations of mice, rats, gerbils, hamsters. Ughhh. It was awful. She then took me over to a 10 gallon tank with about 15 rats in it. They were male and female and of all diffrent ages. Several of the females were obviously preggers and the whole cage was a mess. Most of them were hairless. That was her question.. "why don't some of these have any hair? Are they sick?" wow. I explained to her that they were a type of rat.. yadda yadda. She said that a customer had brought her the tank of rats a few days back. Said that several had babies and they couldnt keep up with them anymore. I picked out 3 of the most healthy looking boys (2 hairless and one thats a tan/golden color) and she told me I could just have them if I paid for a box to put them in ($2). So... after a $200 trip to petsmart for a cage and supplies, I now have 3 new babies. I'm sure the vet bill is going to be UGLY when I take them in on Wed. One of them is sneezing and one has some issues with his eye. They are all terrified of me at the moment but still let me give he baths & curled up in a towel on my lap afterwards. In other news, my big boy, Joe who had fluid around his heart and a Resp. Infection is doing great. And finally taking his medicine without a fight. And he is obviously nowhere near the new little guys. And of course I'm scrubbing down/changing clothes before I get near him after cleaning up the babies. |

baaaaaaaaby kitties!
Seriously - I'm awful! Way worse than usual! Part of it is that the all-night feedings were just wearing me out (seriously!), and part of it is that life got ... interesting ... for a while (David moved back in.) And in the middle of it all, I had to put my oldest kitty, Baby-baby to sleep. Still though - KITTENS!!! So remember these guys? Kiwi, Koala, and Bliss So really folks - if you, or someone you know wants to give any of these guys a good home, do let me know! I live in the SF East Bay, and can work things out if transportation is an issue. The bigs are all getting fixed on Monday, and have had their first shots and been tested clean. Depending on when you want them, I can have the littles fixed as well - but not til they're bigger. That reduces the adoption cost some. My requirements are that they are fixed, and that they are never declawed. I have a strong preference to indoor only, but am open to discussion about that. The declawing and fixing are non-negotiable. You won't find a sweeter kitten than any of these - as sweet, sure, but not sweeter! |

I discovered on Gumtree this morning that someone in my area is looking for a new home for a male Winter White. They've had him for 2 months but their daughter has lost interest (:(). I was charmed by the little fellow straightaway and I know it wouldn't be much more trouble to keep 3 hamsters than to keep 2, especially since he comes with a cage (for a small price but still). I've expressed interest but I haven't yet decided whether to take him or not. I know I'd love him just as much as I love Oreo and Cheesecake but taking another living thing into your care is a big decision. I've Googled but can anyone give me any personal experience of Winter Whites? What do you guys think I should do? Thanks in advance for any help. I want this little guy to go to a good home, I know I could provide him one :)

meds
One of my girls, Tick, has a urinary tract infection. Our vet put her on antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory (Metacam). The antiobiotics can be put in Ensure, and she gobbles it up. She won't touch it if it's in ensure or in various baby foods. Any advice? Has anything worked for you in the past? Can't say I blame her (the stuff smells like ferret) but she has to take this stuff. ( And a couple of pictures for your trouble.. ) Thanks!! |

Wanna Volunteer?
If anyone is interested, Familysearch.org is looking for volunteers to transcribe and index old records. I signed up today and am starting with the 1870 US Census for New Jersey. And because I don't like text only posts, the 1870 census image for John Rockerfeller. I Googled "1870 US Census" and it popped up:

![]() This stacking pill case would be perfect for me. I'm the type of girl who carries her whole life in her purse, and I have a small pill container that contains all different kinds of pills in it. But if I had this, I would never have to dump out all my pills again to find the one pill I want! $1.95 at MoMa. |
